Family History Lost in Second Avenue Explosion

Site of the Second Avenue explosion
Last week, a major gas leak explosion destroyed an apartment building on 2nd Avenue and 7th Street in Manhattan, killing two - one was a young man paying the bill while on a date. This tragedy resulted in the possibility of the neighboring building being demolished due to water and fire damage.

My mother, Paula Borg DiGiovanni, grew up in the building. Her family survived the history of the building since 1900 for over 115 years. The Borg's, Ricci's, Sapachino's, and Belmonte's all lived generation after generation on 2nd Avenue. These buildings recently became a landmark in New York City.

The long, authentic Italian-immigrant history in this building is a story about the American Dream. My mother's family's story is told in today's New York Daily News.

My parents, Frank and Paula DiGiovanni
